Foster carers could lose £700 a year under government plans to cut benefits for social housing tenants deemed to have ‘spare’ bedrooms – even if they are being used by fostered children, campaigners have warned.

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) intends to use the Welfare Reform Bill to reduce housing benefit by up to 23% for tenants living in homes deemed too large for their needs.

The measure will hit 670,000 council and housing association tenants – a third of al working-age housing benefit claimants in the social rented sector across Great Britain.

But the National Housing Federation, which represents England’s housing associations, and the Fostering Network, the UK’s leading fostering charity, have voiced concerns the proposals would hit foster carers living in social housing.

The Children’s Minister, Tim Loughton, has welcomed the commitment by Dixon’s Retail Plc to promote the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) Click Clever, Click Safe campaign through all their PC World and Curry’s stores, through in-store promotion and on till receipts.

The announcement comes on the day of the second UKCCIS annual summit, which brings together mobile phone companies, social networking providers and children’s charities to help keep children safe online.

Click Clever Click Safe Code has been created with three simple, memorable actions: ‘Zip it, Block it, and Flag it’.

Zip It is about keeping personal stuff private. Block It is about blocking people who send nasty messages, and Flag It is about helping children to flag up with someone they trust if anything upsets them online, or someone asks to meet them offline.

Read more about this at http://www.education.gov.uk/inthenews/inthenews/a0077813/childrens-minister-welcomes-dixons-retail-plc-action-to-help-keep-children-safe-online
